Death is Nothing at All

Members of 9GL were asked to write a poem beginning with the line 'Death is Nothing at All'.  This was the title of a famous poem written by Canon Henry Scott Holland, which is often read out at funerals:

Death is nothing at all
I have only slipped away into the next room
I am I and you are you
whatever we were to each other
that we still are
call me by my old familiar name
speak to me in the easy way
which you always used
put no difference in your tone
wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow
laugh as we always laughed
at the little jokes we enjoyed together
pray smile, think of me, pray for me
Let my name be ever the household word
that it always was
Let it be spoken without effort
without the trace of a shadow in it
Life means all that it ever meant
it is the same as it ever was
there is unbroken continuity
why should I be out of mind
because I am out of sight?
I am waiting for you
somewhere very near
just around the corner
All is well

Here are 9GL's versions:

I'm still in your heart,

you just can't see me.

I'm everywhere around you,

So don't be afraid,

I'm just in another body.

Our souls will still go on,

As long as we still believe it,

So treat death as it is another life to live.

Aimee Boswell, 9GL

Death is nothing at all,

It's just the end of life's cycle.

To die it seems is the biggest adventure.

For you cannot see what is around that final corner.

It is the only thing we cannot stop

but everyone some day must drop.

I know that one day I will have to lie.

I am not afraid to die.

Danny Nicholls, 9GL

Death - something no one likes to mention

Everyone always feels the tension

All the sadness and grieving we see

Heaven is that where everyone goes?

Until we die we’ll never know.

 Hannah Campbell, 9GL

Death’s nothing at all,

It just like big fall.

All you’ll be is dead,

But the bad thing is your never see my head,

Not even my face

Death’s nothing at all

It something we all got to go through,

I only slipped next door.

Tony Mehmet, 9GL

Death is nothing at all

It’s just the end of life’s cycle

To die it seems is the biggest adventure

For you cannot see what is round that final corner

It is the only thing we cannot stop

But everyone some day must drop

I am not afraid to die

I know one day I will have to lie.

Death is a thing that happens to all,

To girls and boys, small and tall.

Death is nothing at all

If you think about it

Death is nothing at all

It’s no more than a fall

You could die when you’re ten

It might be the ink from this pen

You could die when you’re ninety

But that would be mighty

Death is nothing at all

One minute you're fine

Sitting at dinner drinking wine

Then BANG your dead

The bullet hit you right in the head

You suffered pain

This ain't no game

You’re gone forever out of their lives

Death is nothing at all

You have to accept that death comes

It could be from a prick in your thumb

There’s nothing to it

It’s like getting bit

But don’t worry don’t panic

You don’t want to be known as a manic

But just remember

Death is nothing at all

Grace Coombs 9GL

Some people say that they don’t want to die,

When the time comes they just want to cry,

But I just sit there quietly;

Death comes just so naturally.

To them it is the thing they fear,

they dread it as it comes near

But yet again I think to myself,

death is nothing at all.

Death comes in different ways,

People counting their remaining days,

But it’s something that will happen to everyone,

It’s something that isn’t very fun.

So when you stop to think of death,

Just remember its nature’s last call,

Smile to yourself, and remember:

Death is nothing at all.

Aimee Budgen, 9GL

It will come so fast you’ll never know,

When it’s your turn to finally go.

When you’re full of cheer,

Knowing your mum was always near.

And when she has passed away,

Always in your heart she’ll stay.

A few years later you turn very ill,

You go to the doctors to see what’s the deal.

They say you caught a disease’ you have a few weeks till you die,

Your eyes fill with water you start to cry.

It’s finally your turn to rest your head,

With your mum in the angles bed.

You’ve lived your life and have learnt the thing,

That death is not such a horrible thing!

Leigh-Ann Harris-Seaton, 9GL

I am gone from this body,

And from this mind,

But remember me dearly,

As part of mankind

My soul has departed

My heart has now stopped

For life has been taken

The popcorn has popped

I ask you not to grieve

Be bold and stand tall

As I have told you

Death means nothing at all ……
